Yaqing Si is located in Baiyu County near Xiacun village on the Ganzi-Baiyu road. Most of the monastery is made up of slum like nuns' quarters. Nearly 10,000 nuns live without basic sanitation in crude structures made from mostly salvaged materials. Food, water and power are all in very short supply. The very much revered Aqiu Lama (Achuck Rinpoche) is head of the monastery and of the entire Nyingma Buddhist sect.

Transport

Shared breadvans to the monastery can be found in Ganzi (about 3 hours). There are also roads to Baiyu and Xinlong where it is usually possible to rent vehicles.

Food and Accomodation

There is one guesthouse at the monastery with a couple of basic but cheap roooms. There's a kitchen with food sometimes available. It should also be possible to camp nearby. A few small shops sell basic supplies but don't expect much. There is also accomodation at the nearest town, Xiacun.

Dear people,

I just returned from Yarchen. At the entrance we were stopped by the police. Visiting Yasrchen is not allowed anymore for foreigners. So it is also not possible anymore to stay there. Fortunately we were there also 10 days ago and then the police didnot spot us. So I have some good pictures from there. I had hoped to get more the second time, but this was the end of the story. Staying in Xiacun is not really fun! Streetlife is great, but both the guesthouses problermatic, certainly tyhe sanitarty situation. Unless of course you like to squat between yakskulls at the back of the yard. After eight o'clock in the evening this is the domain of the dogs and they are not very friendly. But I must admit, I slept very well. even when it was freezing pretty much outside!

Hi, how did you go to Yarchen Gar? Is there a public bus? Is it possible to do a visit in one day from Garze? I want to visit this place in October, maybe then there is no longer police control.
